“Health Food” vs. Healthy Food — How to read labels

Do you know how to read food labels? Maybe you THOUGHT you did. Truth is, you probably don’t.

But Jeff Novick of the Pritikin Center does, and in his full talk he shows the 3 easy steps you MUST know if you ever buy foods at any supermarket or “health” food store.

In this online excerpt, Novick — who used to be a food service manager at Kraft Foods — exposes one of the dirty secrets major food corporations use to deceive consumers. It’s no accident labels are so confusing!

High-protein/low-carb diet proponents claim that the US started eating “low-fat” foods 20 years ago and yet still gained weight, “proving” that the low-fat diet wasn’t effective.

But that’s nonsense, as Novick demonstrates in his talk.

The foods weren’t/aren’t low-fat at all. Food companies use sleight of hand to make them appear that way.

Novick shows how to cut through the nonsense of food labeling to see what you need to see, and understand what you’re really getting.

This is an excerpt from Novick’s 80-minute talk at the VegSource 2007 Healthy Lifestyle Expo, and part of a 12-part series of top health expert presentations.

In his full fascinating and entertaining presentation, Novick teachers the “three easy rules” for cutting through the b.s. and quickly understanding food labels, to know exactly what you’re getting. After watching his talk, you’ll never look at packaged food the same!

This is amazIng. I knew the food industry screws people over on the nutritional listings…I never knew about the trick with weighing their product by weight and not actual calories…which is news to me. Amazing. Keep up the great work.

What an idiot. Different types of fat and carbon hydrates have different energy contents per gram. Saying 68% of the calories automatically means 68% of the weight is retarded. Back to grade school.

    The rats are jumping ship.

CHEMRISK – a research company hired by the Corn Refiners ociation has recently taken down it’s YouTube channel.

The removal was in response to negative public perception resulting from the discovery of dangerous levels of MERCURY in HIGH-FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP. Apparently it has become a liability to defend the sweetener.

  10. If you don’t like …
If you don’t like the 2 grams of fat, then don’t buy it. I don’t buy it because it’s pricey. I would rather make my own vegetable broth and add some oil for flavor/taste. In my opinion, 2 grams is not much fat! (per serving).. Even most veggie burgers have more fat than that, I consider them healthy..

  11. Companies producing …
Companies producing these “low fat” products are only doing it so it is more appealing.

It’s a bit obvious, but if you think about it, if we have one product that’s 50% reduced fat, we’re tempted to buy 2 of the product, thus making them more money. It’s also cheaper for the companies to make the products; they’re all diluted with water.

Overall, it’s not any healthier, and gets us more out of pocket. my solution–just eat naturally and organically; ignore low fat products, and eat less

  14. No! He’s wrong …
No! He’s wrong about the first part!

It’s 1% of fat in grams, not calories!

There are 245 grams in 1 serving of broth.
    245 x 1/100 = 2.45 grams
Therefore, there are 2.45 grams of fat in a serving of broth, as the label dictates if you pause at 1:04

Since 1 gram of fat = 9 calories
and 1 gram of carbs or protein = 4 calories

Then it’s more likely that there will be more than 1% of fat in calories than in grams.

The label cannot lie, or else it will be taken off the shelves by the FDA.

I believe that it is possible to stay healthy into ripe old age and to prevent, stabilise and even perhaps to reverse, many of the chronic degenerative diseases.

Underpinning all my research and advice is this simple fact. Given the right nutrition and lifestyle, our bodies have amazing powers of self-healing and regeneration.
